Hormones are involved in numerous activities that contribute to a joyful and healthy existence. However, as we grow older, there are several factors that can cause fluctuations in hormone levels. While some of these fluctuations are normal with age, others may be due to health issues, injuries, or other factors. Hormone treatments are increasingly being utilized to address a broad range of health issues, and the field of science has seen significant advancements in patient outcomes over the past two decades. Enclomiphene, also known as enclomiphene citrate or by its brand name Androxal, is a non-steroidal drug designed to increase testosterone levels in men while preserving normal sperm counts.
Enclomiphene is closely linked to clomiphene citrate, a drug that has received approval from the FDA for treating issues related to female ovulation. Both drugs share a similar chemical makeup and characteristics.
Enclomiphene functions by attaching to estrogen receptors in the pituitary gland. This interaction prevents the usual negative feedback from the receptors and encourages the release of GnRH, or gonadotropin. Consequently, this leads to the production of other hormones, including follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH).
Although it is closely associated with clomiphene, enclomiphene has a different chemical configuration due to the absence of the cis isomer, zuclomiphene. This absence shortens the duration of the drug’s presence in the body, from about 30 days to approximately 10 hours. This alteration could make enclomiphene a more effective option for men dealing with low testosterone levels and potentially lessen the risk of side effects. Side effects seldom seen – headache, nausea, diarrhea, hot flashes, dizziness, arthralgia (joint pain), and Nasopharyngitis (a common cold).
